Sleep is not an option so I will write.

The boy, Tim, just stood there holding the metal rod in his hand, letting its weight bend his wrist as the cars kept moving with the steadiness of each life that made its appearance and vanished faster than Tim could care. The first thing he remembered as he held the rod was, well the very first thing was finding the rod sticking out of a soda can and ants marching around the base of the can like it was the wall of Jericho. But then he remembered hearing about his aunt getting a pin placed in her back, a metal pin shoved into her spine so that "she didn't fall apart," as his mom had put it, sitting with the coffee cup to her lips at the kitchen table, her hair looking early-morning-terrible, the worry showing in her hands; something about his aunt's stroke and falling and near parallysis made his mom forget the coffee was right there at her face and the steam was making her cry or either she was just crying into the the steam. Then he remembered his father wrapping his fingers around the golf club, showing him how to hold it before driving. He remembers how heavy his father's clubs were, how awkward it was to swing them but putting all his strength behind it because the grass was so green and his father's smile was so big as the ball shot off the tee. He remembered Joshua who always asked to pencil fight while Mrs. Fordham went over the homework. He remembered winning. A car passed by and honked because he'd veered close to the interstate, his shoes covered in mud and his glasses fogged over. The cars never felt so fast as they did then, when he walked alongside I-95 with the soda-sticky rod that made him think twice about leaving.

Hm. I seem to have some thing with memory recently. My tense began shifting like mad as I wrote that, as did my point-of-view. Suddenly Tim became you and you were remembering things in the present. And I kept skipping words and having to go back and re-write them. I think now I am tired. I would have liked to have continued with that one, too. Now, to sleep.

A Graceless Exposition
Walked down to the park today to give my watch to an empty bench (hoping someone would sit there and have an anonymous gift) and a fog had settle over the river. I caught my breath to make sure I was not seeing a mist of my own creation in the cold. There was a muted rainbow halo surrouning all the lights. The wind swept through the thick air and I could only think of waking up early in Miami on a summer morning. I remembered thinking of waking my younger sister early to go outside and play in my dad's boat in the fog. We pretended we were on the water and could see nothing.
